A range of conditions assessed for diagnosis

What is biomechanical assessment?

Purpose

A biomechanical assessment investigates your lower limb. We look in depth for any abnormalities that may be the cause of your discomfort or pain. The function of your lower limb can have a great impact on your daily activities. Performing this assessment allows us to give the best and most effective treatment for your short term or long-term condition.

Why are they required?

How we are built has a big effect on our mobility and how we stand, and anything that causes a lack of symmetry can result in discomfort, which can be attributed to a wide number of reasons and conditions. The biomechanical assessment is carried out to narrow this down, so treatment can be administered.

How are they done?

A thorough assessment is carried out by looking at the structure, alignment, strengths, and weaknesses of your lower limb. The full assessment can take up to 45 minutes and we recommend bringing a pair of shorts or loose trousers with you. We will ask you a range of questions on how your condition is affecting your day-to-day life. We may need to examine your thighs, legs and occasionally, your back.

After your assessment

Once the assessment is complete, we will discuss with you how to best manage your symptoms, which may involve the fitting of bespoke orthotic footwear. These may require a short period of adjustment. We may also recommend home exercises including stretching or strengthening, and advice on the best exercises to do as well as what footwear to wear. If required, we may work with your physiotherapist or doctor, so you have the best help for your condition.
